Windows 10 Support Ending Next Month! Here’s What It Means For You

September 01, 2025

Important Notice: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. While your Windows 10 PC will still operate after this date, Microsoft will stop providing essential services like security updates and technical support that keep your system safe and running smoothly.

Why Business Owners Need to Act Now

  • Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your computer becomes increasingly vulnerable to cyber threats such as viruses, malware, and hackers. Protecting your business data means upgrading to a supported Windows version is vital.
  • Software Compatibility Challenges: Many applications are designed to work with the latest operating systems. After Windows 10 support ends, some software may malfunction or cease to work entirely.
  • Regulatory Compliance Risks: Businesses handling sensitive data or subject to strict regulations could face compliance violations using outdated systems, potentially resulting in fines or legal complications.

What Are Your Next Steps?

Microsoft recommends upgrading to the latest Windows version before support ends. However, not all Windows 10 PCs meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11, and attempting to upgrade incompatible devices will trigger error messages.

If your current PC isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these options:

  • Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
  • Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) for additional protection
  • Switch to a Linux operating system as an alternative
  • Continue using Windows 10 without updates (not recommended due to security risks)

Whatever path you choose, always back up your important files before making any changes to prevent data loss during the transition.

Understanding Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10

If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, you can subscribe to Microsoft's Extended Security Updates, which provide critical security patches for up to one year after official support ends in October 2025. Note that ESU is a temporary fix, not a long-term solution.

To access ESU, you can pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. Alternatively, a free option exists if you enable Windows Backup to sync your settings and files to OneDrive. Keep in mind, OneDrive offers only 5 GB of free storage, so additional space might be necessary for large backups.

Don't delay! You must register for ESU before the October 14 deadline to qualify.
